Cape Town-Victoria Falls - Johannesburg 24 Day Overland Camping Safari A tour with limited comforts but unlimited adventure. Flexibility and an open mind are essential |
| DAY 1 - 2: CAPE TOWN We all meet at the DRIFTERS CAPE TOWN INN at 13h00 to spend the afternoon exploring and visiting the sights. We have one-and-a-half days here, in which time we will hike Table Mountain, visit Cape Point, the Waterfront, Hout Bay and numerous other sights, weather permitting. Overnight in our Inn for the two nights. (Lunches and both evening meals are for your own expense.) B DAY 3: CEDARBERG We leave the Mother City to make for the winelands of Stellenbosch, where we visit wine farms in the area before heading north to camp in the stark Cedarberg mountains for the night. (Lunch today is on a wine farm, own expense.) B D DAY 4 - 5: ORANGE RIVER After a short exploratory hike in the area we pack up and continue to the Orange River, where we camp for two nights on the banks of this, the border between Namibia and South Africa. Relax and explore the area with an option of a canoe trip down the river. B L D |
| DAY 6: FISH RIVER CANYON Today we head directly to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest of its kind in the world. After visiting the view-points for the breathtaking scenery, we set up camp at Hobas, the nearby campsite. B L D DAY 7 - 8: NAMIB DESERT After an early start, we continue north into the true Namib, with its continually shifting barchan dunes and barren landscapes. The next two nights are spent at the DRIFTERS DESERT CAMP bordering the Namibrand Nature Reserve. This camp is spectacularly situated against a rock outcrop between the stark mountains and the red dune-lands. During our stay here we will conduct guided walks and drives within the reserve B L D DAY 9: SOSSUSVLEI Today we visit Sesriem Canyon and the awesome Sossusvlei dunes, where we spend time climbing to the summit. Camp the night. B L D DAY 10 - 11: SWAKOPMUND Arrive in Swakopmund in the late afternoon after travelling through the Naukluft Park to view the Lunar Landscape and the ancient Welwitchia plants. Spend two nights here in relative comfort at the DRIFTERS |
| SWAKOPMUND INN, and enjoy the charming seaside town. One evening
is a restaurant meal (own expense). B L D DAY 12: SPITSKOP Head north up the Skeleton Coast to visit the Cape Cross seal colony before venturing inland once again to camp wild at the impressive Spitskop. DAY 13: PALMWAG A long day: we move on to visit the Bushman rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, whereafter we cross the mountains into the wilderness to camp at the oasis of Palmwag. We hope to see the desert elephants on this day. B L D DAY 14 - 15: ETOSHA |
| An early start, we enter the Etosha National Park, and after
setting up camp at Okaukuejo, enjoy an extensive afternoon game drive. We return to camp
to spend the evening game viewing at the floodlit waterhole. Pushing on through the
reserve, we game drive to Fort Namutoni to camp the night. One night we dine at a camp
restaurant (own expense). B L D DAY 16: GOBABIS Exiting the park, we travel South to the capital city of Windhoek where we stock up with supplies and spend some time exploring before heading for the Kalahari scrubland. Tonight we camp near the Botswana border. B L D DAY 17: MAUN Crossing into Botswana, we travel through the true Kalahari desert to the pioneer town of Ghanzi. Here original pioneer families continue to farm cattle in this inhospitable environment. We continue to Maun, gateway to the Okavango Delta where we overnight at the DRIFTERS CAMP, a camp on the banks of the Boteti river. B L D DAY 18: OKAVANGO DELTA Leaving the Inn early, we travel by 4x4 deep into the Okavango where we conduct a game walk in search of the huge variety of animals that this unique ecosystem is so well known for. Return to the DRIFTERS INN to camp the night. Dinner tonight is own expense at the lodge. B L DAY 19: CHOBE Another early start, we travel through the Makgadigdi Salt Pans area and then into the Chobe Forest Reserves to Kasane where we spend the night on the banks of the mighty Chobe River. | DAY 20-21: VICTORIA FALLS This morning we enjoy a game drive in the Chobe National Park, well know for the huge herds of elephant and other game that are attracted by the floodplains of the Chobe River. During the afternoon we cross into Zimbabwe and travel the short distance to Victoria Falls. We spend two nights here at the DRIFTERS VICTORIA FALLS INN, giving us ample time to explore the falls and to participate in the multitude of activities on offer in this the adventure capital of Africa. (An evenings meal and both lunches will be for your own expense.) B D DAY 22: BULAWAYO Again we travel south, through the city of Bulawayo, and on to the Matobo |
| where we camp the night in our bush camp situated amongst the
precariously balancing boulders that this area is known for. B L D DAY 23: MACHETE This morning we conduct a tour into the National Park to view the sights and game. We then continue south, crossing the border into South Africa and to our bushcamp situated on a private game reserve within the Kalahari sandvelt. B L D DAY 24: JOHANNESBURG This morning we conduct a short walk to view the magnificent bushman paintings surrounding our camp before making the journey to Johannesburg. We arrive at the DRIFTERS JOHANNESBURG INN in the late afternoon. B |
