Johannesburg to Nairobi 30 day Overland Camping Safari A trip not for the faint-hearted. A great deal of participation and flexibility is required |
| Day 1: Johannesburg / Bubi River We start in the early morning to head directly for the Zimbabwe border at Messina. We camp at our camp site on the banks of the dry Bubi River (Diner own expense). Day 2: Zimbabwe Ruins / Bulawayo Travel the short distance to the Great Zimbabwe Monument near Masvingo. Spend some time at the ruins before continuing to our camp nestled amongst the boulders, near Bulawayo. B L D Day 3: Bulawayo / Matobo After breakfast we enter the Matobo National Park, for a game drive and a visit to Rhode's Grave, World's View and other points of interest. B L D Day 4: Hwange Depart for Hwange where we camp in our exclusive bush camp on the outskirts of the National Park. We include an extensive game drive. B L D |
| Day 5 and 6: Victoria Falls Travel to Victoria Falls. We spend two days here, at the Drifters Victoria Falls Inn, giving the opportunity to enjoy the variety of activities available (own expense).One evening meal here will be at own expense. B L D Day 7: Gwabi Camp After an early start we leave Vic. Falls via the Livingstone Bridge over the Zambezi gorge, and travel into Zambia on the long road along Lake Kariba. We make for Gwabi, to camp on the banks of the Kafue River. Relax by the pool and enjoy a hot shower. B L D Day 8 to 10: Zambezi Canoe After a river safety and procedure briefing we begin our canoe adventure. we camp wild on certain islands with some excellent bird and game viewing opportunities. We end the paddle at the Chongwe River. We camp here for another night and conduct a game walk in the area, before transferring by boat to Gwabi camp for a hot shower and a catered meal ( own expense) Camp the night B L D Day 11: Chipata We move north via the capital city, Lusaka, before moving eastwards to make some distance. We overnight in the region of Chipata. B L D |
| Day 12 and 13: Luangwa Valley Travel on to camp on the banks of the Luangwa River where we overnight for 2 nights just outside the Luangwa National Park. We enter the southern park for some game viewing. Camp both nights. B L D Day 14: Livingstonia Beach Moving eastwards into Malawi, we have the chance of replenish stocks and do some curio shopping in Lilongwe, the capital, before continuing down to our camp on the beach of Lake Malawi one of Africa's jewels. B L D Day 15 and 16: Lake Malawi These days are for simple relaxing and soaking up the sun. The waters of Lake Malawi |
| offer some excellent snorkeling opportunities and lovely beach
walks. One night we eat at a restaurant (own expense). B L D Day 17: Lake Shore Travel north up the dramatic Lake road, following the water's edge. We overnight on the lake shore in the region of Karonga. B L D Day 18: Mikumi With a little time to relax, we enjoy a last minute dip in the Lake, before entering Tanzania and making to the town of Mikumi to camp the night. B L D Day 19: Dar Es Salaam / Zanzibar We arrive in Dar Es Salaam, capital of Tanzania around noon. Making our way through this bustling city, we head directly to the harbor where we embark on the ferry ride across to the spice island, Zanzibar. B L D |
| Day 20 to 22: Zanzibar Exploring the spice island thoroughly, we spend time at the remote villages and sandy beaches of the north. Visit the slave spits and participate in a spice tour, the food and fruit market is not to be missed. Sample local cuisine one night (own expense). B L D Day 23: Zanzibar / Dar Es Salaam Leaving the island behind, we board the night ferry for our journey back to the mainland. B L D Day 24 and 25: Arusha Arriving in Dar Es Salaam early morning, we are reunited with our vehicle and continue to Arusha where we spend 2 nights at the well-known Masai camp Site. We enjoy a full day of curio shopping and exploring the markets. |
| At this stage it is possible to view Mount Kilimanjaro, the
highest point in Africa. B L D Day 26: Serengeti Travelling from Arusha to Serengeti we are bound to witness the impressive Masai herdsmen, herding their cattle amongst the game. Most of the day is a game drive with exceptional game viewing. We arrive in the Seronera camp in the late afternoon to camp the night. B L D Day 27: Ngorongoro Crater |
| Rising early we continue game viewing for the entire day, before
exiting the park and making for Simba Camp to camp the night on the lip of the Ngorongoro
Crater. B L D Day 28: Arusha We descend into the crater on the steep dirt track. The diverse habitats of lake, swamp, grassland and acacia forests bring with them an equal diversity of game, from flamingoes to Elephant and the ever-present Masai herdsmen. We finally exit the crater after lunch and return to Arusha for the |
| night. B L D Day 29: Nairobi After a final glimpse of Kilimanjaro we head north to enter Kenya and travel directly to Nairobi. We overnight in a simple hotel with an evening farewell meal (own expense). B L Day 30: Nairobi After breakfast we bid farewell to our fellow travelers and depart on our separate ways. You may return to Johannesburg with our vehicle for a nominal fee, but Drifters would be under no obligation whatsoever. |
