African Safari Destinations The Kalahari Desert in Botswana The Kalahari is not a true desert, but a semi arid zone, extending from the Orange River in South Africa, to the southern reaches of the Congo.

This seemingly endless expanse of land occupies 70% of Botswana's territory, and is home to large herds of game, with its associated predators, and to what remains of a once prolific population - the San (Bushmen); there are about 40000 San in Botswana, still living a lifestyle close to that of the Stone Age Man. It is here that  four of Africa's most remote game areas are situated: The Central Kalahari, Mabuasehube, Khutse and Gemsbok National Park.
