Tongabezi Lodge, Victoria Falls, Zambia
Welcome to
Tongabezi
Tongabezi is a luxury lodge near Victoria Falls on the banks of
the Zambezi River. It was founded in 1990 by Ben Parker and the
late Will Ruck-Keene, pioneers of eco-tourism in Zambia.
Privately owned and run, Tongabezi combines romance and
exclusivity with warm and attentive service. Each house and
cottage has its own valet who takes care of guests throughout
their stay and act as a private concierge.
There is no set pattern to days at Tongabezi. Guests can do as
much or as little as they wish, with game drives, bush walks and
boating trips all included in the price.
Sindabezi Island
Sindabezi Island is unique, an idyllic bush camp on our very own
private island on the Zambezi River. It is the only luxury camp
in the Victoria Falls region and in 2008 was selected by The
Sunday Times in London as one of the best remote places to stay
in the world.
Sindabezi has just five open-sided thatched cottages, allowing
guests to soak up the sights and sounds of the African bush in a
perfect untouched setting. Views across the flood plains of the
Zambezi and into the nearby National Park complete the
experience.
Many guests combine Sindabezi with a stay at our sister
property, Tongabezi Lodge, a short boat ride away.
Tangala - The House & Garden
The house is ideal for families and is designed to keep insects
out, with glass windows all round. Large herds of elephant often
come down to drink on the opposite bank and hippopotamus are
regularly seen and heard. There is fantastic birdlife, with over
145 species to date spotted from the kitchen window. The living
room has a large sofa and two armchairs and leads onto a
‘snuggery' with satellite TV, video, Hi Fi and jetmaster
fireplace. Most of the rooms have very high thatch ceilings and
the passages have large 3-4m high 'Moroccan’ arches, with 1m
thick walls. The swimming pool is 11m x 5m, with an extra
shallow area for children and bench seating. In front of the
house is a grass lawn, which drops 1m to 20 m of wild riverine
grassland and then to the Zambezi River. The house has 250m of
private river frontage, with no properties on either side. The
veranda easily seats ten, and is open thatch with steps on to
the lawn and towards the swimming pool and the terrace, which
has a railway sleeper picnic table, seating eight.
